New York - Round II

I made it back to New York City. After being there in March earlier this year I always knew I would be back, though I didn't think it would be this soon. Basically I had about a week and a half to kill before I head to my new farm so what better antidote to rural life than spending six days in the city that never sleeps.

This time around the weather was better - definitely less cold. There were more markets, more people, more sunshine, more leaves on the trees and I definitely ate more food.

Me and My Mate Yani...

I mentioned in a previous blog about the first calf of the season, Yani. Well, he is finally in good enough health to be back in the field with the big girls (and the three other new calves). He is a friendly little guy and comes to say hello every time I'm in the field. He has also taken a liking to my hair - it must taste nice (or like grass)...

Tomorrow is my last day here though I have promised Anastasia I will come back, exactly when - I'm not sure - but it would be great to see these little guys all grown up.

My little pooky is all grown up...

...and is out playing with the big girls. That's Xanadu I'm talking about. She is my favourite cow, I know, it's not nice to have favourites but when there's a little cow as cute as she is, it's very hard not to. Now that she's moved into the big girls field I don't have to secretly hand feed her grain but she does get a brush or a hug every time I'm down there. She still gets pushed and butted out of the way by the other cows (because she is the smallest) but there is plenty of grass so hopefully she will grow into a big fat cow, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Back on the farm...

I made it to Lifespring Organic Farm in Ontario!

I had organised to stay here before I left Australia so I had been really looking forward to it. The days are long and there is lots of work to be done but I'm loving it! They farm mainly Scottish Highland Cows, but they also have horses, chooks and ducks, barn cats, indoor cats and two beautiful, big cuddly dogs.

This week we welcomed a new baby calf onto the farm. His name is Yani. He was born on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock and I was lucky enough to witness it. I had to stay well clear though as his mother, Rhoda, has been known to toss her calves in the air if someone gets too close. It took him a while to stand by himself and then Rhoda wouldn't let him feed, so we had to move him (in a wheelbarrow) and his mother (not in the wheelbarrow but running along beside it) to the pen with the year old baby girl cows. Quite an adventure for a new born but he's three days old now and doing really well!
